This is a list of the primary ingredients we use in our formulations. We may use other oils and or butters from time to time and will add them to this list if or when we do.
Shea butter - is a fat extracted from the nuts of the Vitellaria paradoxa tree, native to Africa. It is solid at room temperature and melts at body temperature. Is packed with vitamins A and E, which offer antioxidant benefits. Shea butter is incredibly nourishing for skin and hair.
Mango butter - is known for its soothing and anti-aging properties and is often favored for oily or acne-prone skin due to its lighter feel and faster absorption. Like shea butter, mango butter is rich in vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants, which help nourish and protect skin and hair.
Kokum butter - extracted from the seeds of the Garcinia indica tree, is a rich and nourishing natural butter with numerous benefits for skin and hair. It contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe irritation and reduce redness. Kokum butter detangles and conditions hair, leaving it soft, shiny, and manageable. It adds moisture by penetrating deep into the hair shaft, providing intense hydration and reducing dryness and helps to strengthen hair and reduce breakage.
Grapeseed Oil: a silky oil rich in linoleic acid, high in vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It is a lightweight and easily absorbed by the skin.
Sweet almond oil- has high levels of essential fatty acids that help in forming the soft base of the skin.
Jojoba oil - commonly used in cosmetics, jojoba oil is easily absorbed by skin and hair. Jojoba oil closely mimics human sebum, helping to balance oil production.
Caprylic capric triglyceride (coconut oil) is a mixture of triglycerides, which are fats, derived from coconut. As a perfect emollient, caprylic capric triglyceride is an excellent alternative to synthetic ingredients. It is natural, light, gentle, non-greasy and easily absorbed.
Castor Oil - rich in fatty acids with unique antimicrobial and emollient properties. Renowned for multiple healing properties, castor oil is an anti-inflammatory with analgesic properties and is great for hair growth and reducing inflammation and dryness due to eczema or psoriasis.
Emulsifiers - ingredients that help to create stable mixtures of oil and water, which are essential for many cosmetic products like creams and lotions. They allow the water and oil to mix and stay mixed together instead of separating in cream and lotion formulations.
Emulsifying wax NF - natural emulsifying waxes are derived from plants or animals and are used to create stable mixtures of oils and water. These waxes help to stabilize emulsions, improve texture, and enhance the overall consistency of cosmetic products. (the NF, indicates that the emulsifying wax conforms to the specifications of the National Formulary)
BTMS-50 - derived from natural sources, specifically rapeseed oil (also known as colza oil) but does under go processing so it is not considered 100% natural. However, it is an excellent conditioning agent and emulsifier in hair and skincare products, providing benefits like detangling, softening, and improved manageability.
Cetearyl alcohol - is derived from plant-based sources like palm and coconut oil. Cetearyl alcohol is used in formulations to act as an emulsifier, helping to mix oil and water, and as a thickener, providing body and viscosity to the formulation.
Cetyl alcohol – is also found in plant-based oils like coconut oil, palm oil or soybean oil. Cetyl alcohol is an emollient and like cetearyl alcohol, it is also an emulsifier that helps to stabilize emulsions, ensuring the water and oil components of a product stay mixed together.
Beeswax - a natural wax produced by honey bees of the genus Apis. As a humectant it is often used in balms, lotions and other skin care products.
Candelilla wax - is derived from the leaves of the candelilla shrub native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Candelilla wax is a vegan alternative to bee's wax and is used in balms, lotions and other skin care products.
Arrow Root Powder or Corn Starch - arrowroot powder and cornstarch are both commonly used in cosmetics as thickeners and absorbent powders. Cornstarch is naturally derived starch from corn. Arrowroot powder is derived from the Maranta arundinacea (arrowroot plant).
Essential oils - are concentrated, aromatic liquids extracted from plants. They are obtained through distillation or mechanical pressing of various plant parts, such as leaves, flowers, bark, roots, and seeds. They can help prolong the shelf life of cosmetics primarily due to their antimicrobial, antioxidant, and preservative-boosting properties
Fragrance oils - are synthetic liquid scents used to add aroma to a wide variety of products, such as candles, soaps, perfumes, cosmetics, and more. They are created in a lab, using a blend of aroma chemicals and, in some cases, natural ingredients like essential oils. While they can mimic the scent of natural products, they lack the therapeutic benefits of essential oils.
Coloring
Mica - Natural mica powder is made from mica minerals, typically muscovite (although there are about 30 different types of mica minerals). The muscovite is ground into a fine powder, and mixed with natural oxides to color the powder. Synthetic mica is made similarly, but the base mineral is lab-made fluorophlogopite.
Natural coloring we may use in our products:
Turmeric - can help fade dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars It can also add natural yellow coloring to the end product but should be used sparingly to avoid irritation.
Hibiscus flower - contains mucilage, a natural moisturizer that hydrates and softens the skin, when ground and added to other ingredients it acts as a gentle exfoliant, removing dead skin cells and promoting a smoother, brighter complexion. It can also add a reddish tint to your end product.
At Yanave, we use both Natural (essential) fragrances and (synthetic) Fragrance oils. The verbiage “Natural fragrance oil” is used when your fragrance is all natural. If it says Fragrance oil, it may be part natural and part synthetic.
Preservatives are used in emulsified formulations – "emulsify" means to combine two liquids that don't normally mix well, like oil and water, into a stable mixture, by using an emulsifying agent. Preservatives are absolutely required in any formulation that includes water. Without a preservative, the product can develop mold or bacteria that will spoil your product.
Optifen Plus - Is a safe, paraben-free and formaldehyde-free preservative, making it a popular choice for natural cosmetic and personal care products, it is a synthetic blend of phenoxyethanol, sorbic acid, and an emollient base. It offers broad-spectrum preservation against bacteria, yeast, and mold and is often used in formulations where a natural preservative is desired.
Vitamin E Oil – is not a preservative but is an antioxidant: It protects oils and fats in cosmetic formulations from oxidation, which helps prevent rancidity and prolong shelf life. It is also an emollient, helping to soften and smooth the skin.
While there are manty options for preservatives, we have found Optifen Plus to be a safe, stable and effective solution for preserving our emulsified products.
Disclaimer: As with all skincare products, whether natural or synthetic, it's always best to test for allergic reactions before use. Apply a small amount to the inside of your elbow and wait 24 hours. If no irritation occurs, you’re good to go!
